Bicyclist Killed after Colliding with Truck

Jun 9, 2016

A 27-year-old woman was killed when she was struck by a truck as she was riding her bicycle to work in Brooklyn.

The New York Daily News reported that, on June 7 at approximately 6:45 a.m., Leah Sylvain, originally from Newington, Connecticut, was proceeding north on a bike lane on Evergreen Lane in Bushwick when a fuel truck driven by Joseph Cherry turned left onto Hart Street. Mr. Cherry struck Ms. Sylvain, who suffered head trauma after being hit and run over by the truck. She was transported to Woodhull Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

In an interview with FOX 61, Ms. Sylvain’s mother said that her daughter rode her bicycle to work every day to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, where she worked as a set designer. She also said that her daughter had always rode her bike around the city with no problems.

Mr. Cherry, an employee at JMW Trucking Inc., was arrested for failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care. He stayed at the scene and was handcuffed by police without incident. Police said he was charged because Ms. Sylvain had the right of way when he turned in front of her.
