DOT Taking Measures to Resolve Traffic Problems in Flushing

The DOT is taking measures to resolve the traffic problems that have plagued Flushing for years, making it a dangerous area to motorists and pedestrians alike. After work commenced about a year ago on a mixed use project known as the Flushing Commons, bus routes were changed and traffic increased giving rise to more congestion issues. Although a pedestrian walkway was implemented, it was not enough to resolve all of the long standing issues affecting traffic in the area. DOT has become more proactive in addressing the complaints regarding the area and has placed NYPD traffic enforcement agents at busy intersections.

The Commons was previously a municipal parking lot owned by the City that is currently being transformed into a space that will house retail, residences, and businesses. Additional measures DOT is taking to reduce the congestion in the area while construction is underway include creating a left turn only lane from 37th Avenue onto Main Street, as well as installing an all way stop sign to be temporarily placed at the intersection of 37th Avenue and 138th Street. The DOT is still looking into the possibilities of reversing the traffic direction on 38th Avenue and removing parking spaces while construction takes place. Once the first phase of the project is completed in 2017, a portion of the parking lot will be opened. An underground garage is also included in the plans for the Commons.

The downtown area of Flushing is known for having the highest per capita number of accidents in the borough for car accidents that result in injuries or death to pedestrians. If you have been in an accident as a motorist or pedestrian, contact an experienced attorney who will fight to protect your rights. Call Sakkas, Cahn & Weiss at (212) 571-7171.
