Recent New York bicycle accident: 1 killed by truck

Any New York City cyclist who either commutes to work or merely uses a bicycle as a means of transportation, pleasure, or exercise will most likely admit that riding a bicycle in one of the largest cities in the world can be a bit harrowing. With large amounts of traffic and pedestrians popping out of nowhere, it takes great skill to bike in New York, but most bikers stay safe. When a bicycle accident does occur, though, serious injury or death sometimes occurs.

A woman who was known as a successful scenic artist and was a founder of a Connecticut church was recently killed in a bicycle accident. The accident occurred in Brooklyn on a recent Tuesday morning in June. The bicyclist was commuting to work, officials said.

The Brooklyn woman was headed north in a bike lane in the Bushwick neighborhood. Around 6:45 a.m., a fuel truck that was in front of her suddenly turned left and the woman was struck by the truck, ending up under one of the vehicle’s rear wheels, according to officials. She was rushed to a local hospital, where she later died, police said.

The driver of the truck, a 52-year-old Brooklyn man, was arrested at the accident’s scene. Police charged him with committing two crimes related to the fatal accident, as the bicyclist had the right of way at the time he cut her off, police said. If prosecutors manage to secure a conviction on one of these criminal charges, the conviction may be offered as evidence of negligence in a wrongful death suit, should one be filed in a New York civil court by the victim’s loved ones. Successfully navigated, this suit may result in the entry of a monetary judgment for documented damages related to the accident. When individuals lose loved ones in these kinds of accidents, they are often best served by consulting experienced personal injury attorneys as soon after the tragedies as possible.
