Semi truck mows down cyclist in New York bicycle accident

Bicycles are quickly becoming an ever-increasing means of transportation, exercise and recreation in New York. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the city and state still uses vehicles for the majority of transportation needs. Bicycles offer very little protection against some of the hazards that a cyclist often contend with daily. This vulnerability can lead to severe injuries -- and sometimes death -- when involved in a bike accident.

A cyclist was recently critically injured in Brooklyn when he was struck and then run over by a semi truck. The accident occurred in Brooklyn on a recent Tuesday morning in October, officials said. The 35-year-old victim was mowed down around 7:15 a.m, New York City cops said.

Witnesses say both the truck and the bicycle were traveling the same direction on the street and collided when both made a right hand turn onto another street. They say the man was pinned underneath the truck after the collision. He suffered a severe head wound and was rushed to a local hospital, where he was in critical condition. Police were still in the midst of their investigation on Tuesday.

After a serious bicycle accident, it is important to determine exactly how the crash occurred, who caused it, how  the cyclist was injured and whether the cyclist played any role in contributing to the collision. Based upon evidence of negligence, the injured victim may be entitled to pursue claims for compensation for any losses he or she may have incurred as a result of the accident. Gathering this information and the evidence necessary to pursue a claim in a New York civil court is not an easy task, but with the help of an experienced New York personal injury attorney, the victim can better understand his or her rights while avoiding crucial mistakes that might jeopardize the claim's success.
