Preventing common injuries on your New York City vacation

Oct 1, 2019

Fall is a great time to visit New York City. Whether you’re planning to visit the Statue of Liberty, Central Park or a museum, there is so much to do. After all, tens of millions of visitors every year can’t be wrong.

Not only is New York City a popular tourist destination, it’s a heavily populated place to begin with. That many people in the same place increases the chances for accidents and sustaining a personal injury.

Among the best ways to keep yourself safe in New York City is to remain aware of your surroundings as you’re taking in the sights. Things like uneven sidewalks or collisions with busy New Yorkers could cause tripping or slip-and-fall accidents if you’re not careful. A few ways to avoid suffering a vacation injury include:

  • Looking both ways. New York City is a busy place and sometimes the best way to get around is on foot. Unfortunately, not all drivers stop for pedestrians so it’s a good idea to obey all traffic signals and look both ways before crossing a street.
  • Watching the path in front of you. Not only is looking out for cracks or protruding sidewalks wise, it’s smart to keep to the right side of the path if you’re moving slower than others around you. Doing so allows other pedestrians to get around you, ensuring the safety of everyone.
  • Planning your route. If this is your first time visiting New York City, it’s easy to get lost. Attempting to stop in the walkway could cause someone to run into you, potentially causing an injury. By planning your route in advance and stepping safely out of the walkway if you must, you can avoid tripping or a collision.

New York City is a great place for a vacation but if you do sustain an injury, you should know that you can still seek damages if you miss work or receive medical bills related to your injury. You can still work with an attorney in the city who knows New York’s personal injury laws and can have your doctor back home treat you.

An injury is a vacation souvenir that no one wants, but they unfortunately still happen. The good news is that you may be able to receive compensation for any missed work or resulting medical bills from your vacation injury.
