Teen involved in bicycle accident is in critical condition

Sep 9, 2016 | 0 comments

Bicycles are a common means of transportation, exercise and recreation all across New York. However, bicycles offer very little in terms of protection against some of the hazards that a cyclist must contend with daily. This vulnerability can — and often does — lead to severe and catastrophic injuries when involved in a bike accident.

A teen is currently in critical condition after a truck backed into him. The incident occurred on a recent Monday afternoon in May. The accident occurred in Steuben, the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The 17-year-old suffered leg and head injuries as a result of the accident. He was airlifted to a local hospital and then an upstate hospital located in Syracuse. The 43-year-old Carthage driver was backing her milk truck onto a driveway when a sudden loud noise coming from the rear of the vehicle caught her attention. When she got out, she discovered a bicyclist and bike under her truck’s third axle. She quickly called 911.

After a a bicycle accident, it’s important to determine exactly how the crash occurred, who caused it, how the victim was injured and whether the cyclist played any role in causing the collision. Based upon evidence of negligence, the injured cyclist is entitled to pursue claims for compensation for any losses incurred as a result of the accident. Gathering this information and the evidence necessary to pursue a civil court claim is not an easy task. With the help of an experienced New York personal injury attorney, the victim can better understand his or rights while avoiding crucial mistakes that might jeopardize the claim’s success.
